Should you buy an EV in 2025?

Mahindra BE 6

Before beginning this topic, you should know that EV sales in India grew from 130,000 in 2019 to 1.95 million in 2024. This electric revolution was driven mainly by Tata Motors to begin with. But now, there are many brands like BYD, Hyundai, KIA, MG & Mahindra in the market. With EV Sales continuing to rise, more and more brands along with new products are set to enter the market.

In 2025, buying an EV mainly depends on your usage of a car. You can consider buying an EV, if:

Considerable Daily Commute

If you travel more than 50 kms on a daily basis, let’s say, you’re one of those who travel from Noida to Gurgaon to work and return back home in Noida, then you should definitely consider an EV, as your next car.

Low Running Cost

The reason why we mentioned the point above is that EVs generally have a very low running cost, thereby, your cost per km travel can be as low as 0.8 to 1.2 INR. Yes! That’s less than what it may take for you to travel via public transport.

Dedicated Parking Space

In many tier 1 cities, having a dedicated parking space is a very big concern, but you should definitely consider buying an EV if you have a dedicated parking space as your home or apartment, as it can help you set up a EV charger which can let you leverage the maximise potential of your EV’s low running cost.

Easy to Drive

EVs are even better than automatic ICE cars when it comes to driving in cities. As these modern cars don’t have gears (all EVs only have one gear), they become your perfect companions when it comes to driving in traffic and inter city travel

Now that you have the reasons to consider an EV as your next car, let’s look at the reasons why you should stay away from it:

Limited Charging Infrastructure

Public Charging in India is still developing and chargers are not easily available especially outside the metro cities. So, if you are someone who lives in a tier 2 or tier 3 and likes to travel a lot, then you may consider not buying an EV for the time being. Also, if you’re someone who doesn’t have a proper charging setup at your home, taking your EV to a commercial fast charger to charge it can be a hassle

High Initial Cost

EVs are 20-40% more expensive than their ICE counterparts. An EV only becomes a valuable asset, if you have considerable daily commute. In case, you drive less than 30 kms a day, then we would recommend you to not consider an EV

Long Charging Times

An EV usually takes 7-11 hours to charge at home with a fast AC charger. So, if you are some who needs their car in quick turnarounds or for very long travel on a frequent basis, then EV may not be for you.
